Share of mini passenger cars in Japan FY 2019, by type

According to a survey conducted in 2019 about the usage of light motor vehicles among private households and businesses in Japan, the most common type of mini passenger cars owned in the country were tall cars, while super tall cars were the second most used car type at 25 percent. Tall type kei cars are typically mini vehicles with a maximal height of approximately 1,600mm.
Japanese mini cars or kei cars are vehicles defined by being shorter than 3.4 meters with a maximum height of 2 meters and a maximum width of 1.48 meters. The engine capacity is restricted to 0.66 liters measured by Japanese standards. Kei cars are often box shaped in order to minimize the overall size of the vehicle while maximizing interior space.
