Piracy and robbery incidents in East Africa 2015-2018

This statistic represents the yearly number of reported incidents of piracy and robbery in the waters surrounding the East African region from 2015 to 2018. The highest number of incidents was recorded in 2017 with a total of 54 cases recorded. The number of incidents reduced significantly in 2018 to nine reported cases, which is also the lowest number of cases recorded within the four-year period. Weak economy and the presence of crime networks are the main causes of piracy off the Somali coast.
