Price of residential electricity in Latin America 2022, by country

As of the end of 2022, Guatemala had the highest household electricity price among Latin American countries, with an average of 0.29 U.S. dollars per kilowatt-hour. Honduras, Uruguay, and Peru also recorded prices above 0.25 U.S. dollars per kilowatt-hour. Meanwhile, Argentina and Cuba reported the lowest rates among the countries displayed, at less than 0.05 U.S. dollars per kilowatt-hour.

Electricity prices across the American continent

Electricity prices vary considerably across the American continent. In September 2022, the Caribbean country of Jamaica accounted for the highest household electricity price in the region, at 0.33 U.S. dollars per kilowatt-hour. In comparison, the residential electricity price in the United States amounted to approximately 0.15 U.S. dollars per kilowatt-hour, like the prices in Brazil and Costa Rica.

Global electricity prices

With the energy crisis of 2022, global electricity prices boomed to unprecedented values in most countries worldwide. Countries highly dependent on fossil fuels and energy imports, such as Jamaica and the European countries, accounted for the wildest price surge. In some cases, price caps set by governmental institutions kept domestic electricity prices under a certain threshold, such as in Brazil.
