As of 2016, the best-known foreign language in Italy was mostly spoken at a basic level. Only nine percent of people had advanced foreign language skills. According to data from 2019, almost all students in Italy learned English in school. French and Spanish were the second and third most-taught foreign languages in Italian schools.
