City expenditure on police as a share of total direct expenditure 1977-2017

Between 1977 and 2017, expenditure on policing by the city of Wilmington, Delaware increased from 6.14 percent of total direct expenditure to 13.96 percent of total direct expenditure. Conversely, the city with the lowest increase over this time was San Francisco, were spending fell from 4.59 percent of total direct expenditure to 3.44 percent - although in neighboring Oakland, police expenditure increased from 4.97 percent to 6.26 percent.

Note that as these figures are based on the expenditure share, they do not indicate the increase in absolute spending over this period.
