Happoshu shipment volume in Japan 2009-2018

In 2018, the shipment volume of low-malt beer in Japan amounted to around 50 million cases, down from about 95 million cases in 2009.
Low-malt beer, commonly referred to as happoshu, is a beer-like beverage with a malt content of less than 67 percent. As the Japanese liquor taxation system grades beer and beer-like alcoholic beverages according to the malt extract content, happoshu became a cheaper alternative to beverages classified as 'beer.'
