Globally, vessel contracting activity sharply declined in the first quarter of 2020, mainly as a consequence of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. From January to March 2020, some 6.6 million deadweight tonnes were ordered worldwide. Compared to the first quarter of 2019, this was a 55 percent decline.
