Italy: most popular ways of pet adoption 2007-2019

Pet adoption represents one of the main ways of acquiring a domestic animal in Italy. However, there are many possible means of pet adoption: which one is the most popular? This survey conducted on Italian veterinaries' clients suggested that most people found their to-be-pets roaming on the streets and took them home. However, the popularity of this adoption methods diminished, as it went from 79 percent in 2007 to 69 percent 12 years later. This decrease could be due to another adoption way that seemed to be on the rise: in 2019, in fact, four percent of respondents adopted an animal through alternative means such as social networks, compared to a percentage close to zero in all other years under consideration. The popularity of adopting pets through animal associations increased as well, moving from around two percent in 2007 to 4.4 percent in 2019. Saving cats or dogs from shelters was a quite consistent adoption method, with around 20-25 percent of respondents choosing this option through the years.
