As of 2023, Stripe was the most valuable fintech company in the United States. The value of the firm, which provides payment processing services and is headquartered in San Francisco, amounted to 50 billion U. S. dollars. Chime followed in the ranking, with a valuation of approximately 25 billion U.S. dollars. In 2022, four of the ten largest fintech deals involved companies headquartered in the United States.
Fintech industry
Fintech stands for financial technology, and it refers to businesses that offer financial services using software and technology. Thanks to their innovative attitude, fintech is often associated with start-ups, but this is not necessarily the case. In fact, established businesses can also engage in fintech activities. Fintech is a fast-growing industry, though investment activity slowed down notably in 2022, when global investments in the sector were more than 70 billion U.S. dollars lower than in 2021. The large majority of fintech investments still concentrated in the Americas, though the gap between the Americas, Asia Pacific, and EMEA became smaller in recent years.
Fintech investment landscape
The value of investments into fintech decreased notably in 2022, with the Americas seeing a particularly large, 40 billion U.S. dollars drop. At the same time, deal volume also decreased compared to 2021’s high, but still remained well above the volume prior to 2021. The decline in global investment activity does not paint a fully accurate picture, however. Seed and early-stage companies, for instance, continue to draw attention, with seed deals reaching record investment in 2022. At a sector level, regtech recorded the highest investment value in 2022, while at a regional level, the Asia Pacific also hit a new peak.
