Following the election of Donald Trump in 2016, support for a Constitutional amendment so that the outcome of presidential elections in the United States are determined by the winner of the popular vote rather than the Electoral College declined, falling from 62 percent in October 2011 to 49 percent in November 2016. Support has since risen again to 61 percent in 2020. Donald Trump famously defeated Hilary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election despite losing the popular vote.
