The start-up business model was gaining popularity in Italy between 2015 and 2020. This is what emerged from data collecting the number of new start-ups founded in the country over the first half of each year in this period. Newly registered start-ups grew in number every year until 2019 when they peaked at more than 1,500. The biggest increase was between 2016 and 2017, when figures doubled. 2020 was the first year to register a decrease, most probably due to the difficult economic environment that resulted as a consequence of measures taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
