Production of milled rice in Nigeria 2010-2021

In 2021, the quantity of milled rice produced in Nigeria was estimated at five million metric tons. Between 2010 and 2021, milled rice production in the country generally increased. The largest growth in output was registered in 2010, when the crop volume experienced a 26 percent increase compared to the previous year.

Higher quantities of whole grain rice

Over the years, the quantity of unprocessed rice produced in Nigeria outnumbered that of milled rice. For instance, paddy rice production reached approximately 8.2 million metric tons in 2020. Although this was a slight decrease in output compared to the preceding year, it represented an overall increase in whole rice production in the country. Overall, as of 2019, rice accounted for more than 14 percent of the crops cultivated by households in Nigeria.

Varying rice prices

On the Nigerian rice market, individuals have a variety of brands to choose from. Rice prices vary from brand to brand, and even from market to market. For instance, as of 2020, 10 kilograms of Mama Gold rice in Mile 12, one of the country’s largest markets, cost five thousand Nigerian naira (NGN), while the same quantity was sold for 4.5 thousand NGN at the Daleko and Oyingbo markets. Overall, the cost of a kilogram of high quality imported rice was set at an average of some 547 NGN as of September 2021.
