Price index of maize in South Africa 2001-2019
In the calendar year 2019, the price index of maize stood at 153.1 percent. This was an increase of 3.3 percent compared to the previous year. In 2005, the price index was at 58.2, lowest within the time span of 2001 to 2019, while in 2016 the price index was at its peak at 320.3 percent. This was caused by the drought that occurred between 2015 to 2017, which eventually led South Africa to import maize.
