Barley production in South Africa in 2019, by province
In 2019, the aggregate production of barley in South Africa amounted to 345 thousand metric tons. Western Cape was the leading province in barley production with 274.5 thousand metric tons, which is approximately 80 percent of the overall production. Out of the nine states Mpumalanga was missing, while Gauteng, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal's barley production was nil or negligible. The possible justification for Western Cape's dominance in production of barley can be attributed to the fact that barley is a winter crop, with the region being a winter rainfall area.
