Production of canola in South Africa 2000-2019
As of 2019, the production of canola in South Africa decreased slightly to 96 thousand metric tons. In the year before, 104 thousand metric tons of canola were produced in the country. Between 2000 and 2010, the production rarely passed over 40 thousand metric tons. On the other hand, canola production experienced a huge increase from 2011, reaching a peak of 121 thousand metric tons in 2014. The increase was attributed to improvements in production practices as well as technological innovations. Another driver may be the recognized growth of the middle class in South Africa, leading to an increase in the domestic demand for canola.
