According to a survey conducted in February 2020, more than 32 percent of respondents in Japan spent less than 100 thousand Japanese yen on a ceremonial meal during funeral services for their deceased family members, which was the most common amount of spending. About 6.4 percent spent more than one million yen for food and drink. In a customary procedure of funeral services in Japan, a vigil takes place on the first day, and a funeral ceremony followed by cremation is performed on the second day. Bereaved families usually offer a ceremonial meal to the attendees after the ceremony.
