Production of tobacco in South Africa 2000-2018
As of 2017/2018, the production of tobacco in South Africa was at 15.6 thousand metric tons, an increase of roughly 5.4 percent from 2016/2017. The tobacco production in the country was higher at the beginning of the 21st century. After that, a severe drop started in 2003/2004, culminating with the lowest production level, at 9.1 thousand metric tons in 2007/2008. The fall was related possibly to less consumption due to increases in the excise tax, as part of the government's tobacco control policy.
