Expectation of athlete support for BLM movement in the U.S. 2020
Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a social movement advocating for an end to police brutality and violence against Black people. The death of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis in May 2020 caused a renewed wave of public outrage and, following his death, many athletes threw their support behind the BLM movement and advocated social change. During a June 2020 survey in the United States, 59 percent of respondents stated that they expected athletes to personally help progress the BLM movement.
