The number of oil drilling induced earthquakes recorded in the U.S. South reached 570 in the first five months of 2021. Earthquakes above the magnitude of 2 on the Richter scale increased fourfold between 2017 and 2020 as a result of drilling methods that require injections of water. Water injections are used in order to maintain or increase pressure levels in the reservoir and thus raise oil outflow from the well.
