Prison population and capacity in Romania 2020, by facility
In 2020, the majority of prisons in Romania were overcrowded. In other words, they had a higher prison population than European legal standards allowed it. According to the European Court of Human Rights, every prisoner has to have a personal space of minimum four square meters for their fundamental rights not to be breached.
