Sales volume of sweet melons on markets in South Africa 2000-2018
As of 2017/2018, the preliminary volume of sweet melons sold on local markets in South Africa amounted to roughly 7.06 thousand metric tons, which illustrated an increase of 8.5 percent from 2016/2017. In the first three years of the 21st century, a relatively low volume of sweet melons was sold, ranging between 4.37 thousand and 3.88 thousand metric tons with an average of close to 4.1 thousand metric tons. This was followed by a significant increase of 87.4 percent in 2003/2004, which registered a volume of 7.54 thousand metric tons. Furthermore, between 2003/2004 and 2017/2018, severe fluctuations occurred while the sales quantity of sweet melons on local markets ranged between approximately 8.7 thousand metric tons (which was the peak) and about 5.92 thousand metric tons (the trough), representing an average of 7.34 thousand metric tons.
