Voluntary clean power sales by consumers in the U.S. 2019, by type
U.S. consumers bought an estimated 164 million megawatt hours of renewable electricity beyond what their utilities otherwise supplied in 2019. The majority was accounted for by unbundled renewable energy certificates, which retail customers buy separate from their underlying electricity supply. An estimated 4 million megawatt hours of clean energy were provided to customers through long-term contracts with utilities.
