The effect of economic sanctions imposed on Russia in 2014 led to a significant restructuring of inbound investment shares in its oil and gas industry. Namely, the investment share of European and North American origin fell from nearly 90 percent to 33 percent from one period to another, while Middle Eastern investment flows grew from zero to one quarter of the total between 2015 and 2019, relative to the pre-sanctions period.
