Distribution of planted area for cereals in Tanzania 2016-2017
Maize was the cereal that occupied the largest planted area in Tanzania for the season 2016/2017, accounting for roughly six million hectares. Maize fields corresponded to 70.2 percent of the total area for cereal crops (approximately 8.6 million hectares). A staple food for most of the Tanzanians, maize plays a key role in ensuring food security in the country.
