Public electricity and heat production in the European Union (EU-27) released nearly 709 million metric tons of CO₂ in 2021. This represented an increase of roughly 10 percent in comparison to the previous year, when emissions dropped as a result of reduced power demand caused by COVID-19 related lockdowns and restrictions. Nevertheless, electricity and heat production emissions in the EU have fallen by more than 42 percent when compared to 1990 levels.
