Public electricity and heat production in the European Union (including the UK) released 697.4 million metric tons of CO2 in 2020 - a decrease of 1 percent compared with 2019 levels. This dramatic reduction was a result of reduced power demand caused by COVID-19-related lockdowns and restrictions. Since 1990, electricity and heat production emissions in the EU have fallen by more than 50 percent.
