In fiscal year 2021, the agricultural sector, including enteric fermentation and rice cultivation, was the by far largest source to generate methane emissions in Japan, accounting for more than 81 percent of total methane emissions in the country. Waste, including land filling and wastewater treatment, followed with the second largest share, accounting for slightly more than 12 percent of methane emissions.
