Australia: proportion of adults who are overweight or obese 2018

In 2018, 67 percent of adults in Australia were overweight or obese. Obesity alone accounted for over 30 percent of adults. Children under the age of 18 were significantly less likely to be obese, however, overall obesity rates in Australia are considered to be high.

Overweight and obesity classification is based on measured height and weight. Separate BMI scores were created for children taking into account age and sex. The BMI cut off categories differ to those used in adult BMI classification and follow the scale provided in Cole et al. 2000.

Estimates for the 25–34, 35–44, 45–54, 55–64, 65–74, 75–84, 85 years and over, Total aged 5–17 years and Total 18 years and over age groups use published ABS data which has been randomly adjusted to avoid the release of confidential data. Discrepancies may occur between sums of the component items and totals.
