In 2020, there were 1.6 million informal female carers in Australia, 649,000 of which identified as primary caregivers. Significantly fewer men identified as primary carers while similar numbers of men and women identified as non-primary carers.

Informal care is defined by the source as the unpaid care provided to older (65 years and over), dependent or disabled persons by a person with whom they have a social relationship, such as a spouse, parent, child, other relative, neighbor, friend or other non-kin connection.
