Share of avalanche fatalities by activity in France 1980-2018
Over the period from 1980 to 2018, 43 percent of those killed in avalanches were hikers. Off-piste skiing was also a dangerous activity: over the same period, 35 percent of victims were off-piste skiers, compared to only two percent of skiers or snowboarders who practiced their sport on the slopes of ski resorts.
