Tanzania: schools with handwashing facilities by area

Around 64 percent of schools in Tanzania reported to have handwashing facilities in 2018. The share was higher among schools in urban areas, at 75.3 percent. In rural zones, 63.4 percent of schools indicated the presence of infrastructure for the students to wash their hands. In general, findings from observations were less than the reported ones.

From the total number of schools, 2,240 were located in Tanzania Mainland and 156 in Zanzibar.

According to the source, handwashing facilities in schools refer to any infrastructure (fixed or mobile) that enables students to wash their hands effectively using running water from piped water with taps, sink with tap, water tank with tap, bucket with tap, and tippy tap among others. A shared bucket used for dipping hands is not considered an effective handwashing facility.
