As of March 2020, the non-performing loan (NPL) ratio of major banks in Japan was 0.6 percent. The same year, the total value of loans of major banks in Japan amounted to almost 340 trillion Japanese yen. The NPL ratio shows the ratio of bad loans to total loans. Japan has experienced a period of high non-performing loan ratios as a result of the financial crisis caused by the burst of the economic bubble in the 1990s. In 2002, NPL ratios of major banks accounted for around eight percent of the total credit in Japan.
