As of March 2021, the non-performing loan (NPL) ratio of banks in Japan stood at 1.2 percent. The NPL ratio shows the ratio of bad loans to total loans. Japan has experienced a period of high non-performing loan ratios as a result of the financial crisis caused by the burst of the economic bubble in the 1990s.
