Egypt: monthly prices for unpacked rice 2023

As of May 2023, the monthly average price for unpacked "baladi" rice in Egypt stood at 29.33 Egyptian pounds (0.95 U.S. dollars) per kilogram, an increase of 10.76 percent from April 2023. The Egyptian government's decision of importing rice in July 2018 led to supply growth, aiming to control the market and stop increases in the prices. The decision came to cover the population's demand, amid the need to reduce the cultivation of water-intensive crops due to water shortages.
