Japan: special steel products order volume by sector 2022

In 2022, the automobile industry in Japan ordered more special steel products from members of the Japan Iron and Steel Federation (JISF) than any other domestic sector, its orders amounting to about 3.9 million metric tons. Orders for export added up to around 4.5 million tons, representing roughly a third of the total demand.

As regulated by the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS), ordinary steel is carbon steel, which does not require heat treatment and contains silicon, manganese, phosphor, or sulfur.
Special steel, in contrast, is steel alloyed with other elements like chromium, nickel, molybdenum, or vanadium and has received heat treatment.
