Domestic demand for petroleum Japan FY 2012-2021
In the fiscal year 2021, the domestic demand for petroleum in Japan amounted to around 6.73 thousand petajoules. Figures peaked in 2012, reaching around 9.41 thousand petajoules. After the nuclear disaster in Fukushima in 2011, nuclear energy was replaced by fossil fuels, resulting in an increased demand for petroleum for energy production. In more recent years, the petroleum demand has declined since Japan aims to replace fossil fuels with nuclear and renewable energy.
