Japan: number of improved accessibility taxis

As of March 31, 2021, there were around 41.46 thousand welfare taxis with improved accessibility available in Japan, an increase from roughly 37 thousand in the previous year. While the government had announced its aim to have around 44 thousand welfare taxis on the streets by the end of fiscal 2020, it had set a similar goal for non-step buses with a low floor.

The MLIT refers with the term "welfare taxi" to taxis of the following kind: stretcher accessible vehicles, wheelchair accessible vehicles, stretcher/wheelchair accessible vehicles, as well as taxis with transfer aids, such as rotating seats and the like. A permit for the transportation of people with disabilities is necessary.
