In 23 out of 34 African countries, the U.S. was preferred over China as a model of development, according to a survey conducted between 2019 and 2021. China was mentioned by more citizens in only five nations, namely Benin, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Botswana. In some countries, the preference for the U.S. was largely higher than for China. In Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Morocco, for instance, the gap between both model countries was at 77, 40, and 34 percentage points, respectively. Besides, in Tanzania, Senegal, Eswatini, Malawi, and Tunisia, the U.S. and China were equally preferred.
