Relief funds received by crime victims South Korea 2012-2019

In 2019, the South Korean government spent over 11.5 billion South Korean won on relief funds for crime victims. This figure is expected to grow in the future due to rising wages as well as the continuous adjusting of regulations to allow more affected families to register for funds.

Physical and material damage

Innocent people that were the target of crime often suffered damage both physically, mentally, and financially. The silver lining for such unfortunate circumstances was that the majority of crime victims did not need prolonged periods of rehabilitation to recover from their experiences. Additionally, a significant amount of crime cases that resulted in property damage of less than one million South Korean won, which roughly converts to a little over nine hundred U.S. dollars (as of November 2020). An important caveat to this, however, is that there were also numerous cases in which the amount of property damage done could not be calculated.

Beware of strangers

Crime statistics showed that the relationship between suspects and victims were usually those of strangers. This highlights the randomness of suspects, and how everyday people can fall victim. It remains prudent to be on guard and try to notice any irregularities or suspicious behavior. Out of the recorded crime cases in the country, the majority of victims were deceived.
