Severe food insecurity in African regions 2014-2019

East Africa is the region with the highest level of food insecurity in Africa. As of 2019, 24.7 percent of the region's population were food insecure. Southern Africa followed, with a prevalence of 19.8 percent in the same year. Furthermore, over the observed period, while the prevalence of the population which had experienced hunger fluctuated in Northern and Southern Africa, it mainly increased progressively in the other regions. Overall, compared to other world regions, food insecurity peaked in Africa in 2019.
