From 2016 to 2019, the commercial balance of rice in Latin America and the Caribbean fell into negative territory, though experiencing a steady improvement within that period. In 2019, rice trade in the region registered a deficit close to 427 million U.S. dollar, up from the -742 million recorded in 2016. In 2018, Brazil was the leading country for rice consumption in Latin America.
