According to a 2023 survey, the most common reason why investors in Europe and Greater China are using smart beta products is to mitigate risks. On the other hand, the most common reason why American investors are using or considering using smart beta is to generate income. Smart beta funds differ from traditional exchange traded funds (ETFs) in that, while they track an index, they have an additional set of rules which guide which stocks from that index should be included in the portfolio at any given point in time.
