In 2000, contemporary artworks sold by Fine Art public auctions worldwide generated an income of 0.1 billion U.S. dollars. In 2019, revenue rose to 2.01 billion U.S. dollars, remaining stable over the previous year. As of the period considered, the global auction revenue of contemporary art peaked at 2.43 billion U.S. dollars in 2014.
