
Undernourishment in Northern African countries 2004-2022
From 2020 to 2022, Sudan was the North African country with the highest prevalence of undernourishment, measured at 11.9 percent of the total population. The rate was around five percentage points more than the sub-regional average (6.8 percent). In Egypt, the prevalence of the population which did not eat enough food reached 7.2 percent in the same period, an increase compared to the 6.4 percent recorded from 2004 to 2006. Furthermore, over the observed three-year periods, Algeria registered the lowest share of undernourished people, accounting for 6.7 percent of the population from 2004 to 2006 and less then 2.5 percent between 2020 and 2022.
