Value of imported goods into Denmark 2010-2020

The value of imported goods grew over the past decade in Denmark. In 2010, the value of imported goods amounted to around 463 billion Danish kroner. Denmark’s total imports was worth about 650 billion kroner in 2019 but declined the following year as a result of the coronavirus crisis (COVID-19). In 2020, Denmark imported goods worth 624 billion Danish kroner.

Fewer exports due to COVID-19

Another consequence of the pandemic is a decreasing number of exports. Since the outbreak of the coronavirus, Denmark exported fewer goods than expected, breaking the general tendency of growing exports in the country. In 2020, Denmark exported goods worth around 699 billion Danish kroner, which was significantly lower compared to the previous year. Despite a lower value of exported goods, the trade balance in Denmark remains positive as the import value is lower than the export value.

Who is Denmark importing to?

Germany is inarguably the most important trading partner for Denmark. In 2019, Denmark imported goods from Germany worth over 140 billion Danish kroner. Goods from Sweden account for the second most of Denmark’s imports, reaching roughly 78 billion kroner that same year. Regarding exporting countries, a similar picture appears: Denmark exports the most goods to Germany and Sweden. The United States, however, is the third most important export country for Denmark.
