Share of support for protests at the U.S. Capitol, by party January 2021

On January 6, 2021, protestors stormed the U.S. Capitol while Congress was in the process of certifying the Electoral College votes for the 2020 presidential election. Protestors in favor of President Donald Trump gained access to the Capitol, resulting in the vote certification being interrupted and the evacuation of the U.S. Congress. According to a survey conducted afterwards, 59 percent of Republicans strongly opposed this action, compared to 88 percent of Democrats and 67 percent of Independents.
