
U.S. opinions on paying reparations to slave descendants in 2019 by region
In a 2019 survey, 24 percent of adults in the southern U.S. (where slavery was most prevalent) strongly supported the idea of paying financial reparations to U.S. citizens descended from slaves, while 36 percent in the Midwest strongly opposed the idea. When figures are combined, 43 percent supported the idea in the Northeast, while 51 percent in the Midwest were opposed.
