In 2021, there were over 20.67 thousand so-called fashion health on-demand services operating in the Japanese sex industry. Fashion health is a Japanese pseudo-anglicism usually describing massage parlors offering sexual services that stop short of actual intercourse. On-demand fashion health refers to a business model in which the services are provided at love hotels or at the customer's home.
While prostitution is officially illegal in Japan, the domestic adult entertainment industry took advantage of legal loopholes to work around this ban. Businesses falling under the category of adult entertainment include, among others, adult-only bathhouses, strip clubs, love hotels, call girl services, as well as video- and phone-based services.
