In 2019, Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. was the leading shipbuilding company in Japan, producing a gross tonnage of approximately 5.41 million.
In light of unfavorable business conditions and fierce international competition, the company merged with Japan Marine United Corporation (JMU) to form Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd. in January 2021.
