In 2019, a survey investigated the use of external e-commerce sites for orders and purchases made by German companies and organizations. The transactions made outside the business procurement platforms included other types of expenditure such as tail spend, which is left out from the strategic spending of a company and is less relevant in terms of value but involves a large number of suppliers. The use of e-commerce sites increased slightly over time. In 2019, 29.3 percent of German businesses stated to make more use of e-commerce sites, up from 24.8 percent in 2018.
