Japan: average monthly private car maintenance costs by type 2023

According to a survey conducted in June 2023, monthly maintenance costs for SUV and off-road vehicles in Japan amounted to around 17.6 thousand Japanese yen. While SUV and off-road vehicles were estimated to have the highest maintenance costs, light automobiles (also called kei cars) entailed the lowest maintenance costs on average and also were the most prevalent car type among respondents.

Maintenance costs include insurance premiums, fuel expenses, parking fees, repair costs, etc., and exclude taxes, loan repayments, and toll road fees.

The survey participants were Net Asia Research Internet Monitoring members who owned a private passenger car and drove once a month or more. The survey arbitrarily picked valid responses for its sample, comprising equal parts of male and female participants in four same-sized age groups.
